New wifi-radio.biz website is coming

17 03 2008

Tonight, the Com One Tech team will migrate the Northern american operations’ Phoenix platform to its new version, designed in order:

  • to insure a proper QoS to the Phoenix solution ( Phoenix Wi-Fi radio + wifi-radio.biz website)
  • to offer our customers the opportunity to register and customize their devices very easily via an intuitive and ergonomic interface
  • to enable “non- Phoenix Wi-Fi radios’” owners to take a first step into wifi-radio.biz portal and convince them to adopt this new approach of radio listening.

It also means that by wednesday morning, you will have access to a totally new wifi-radio.biz website, much more centered around contents and devices than the actual one.

Among the new nice features, you will be able to:
  • Listen, with no time limit, to thousands of radio stations, podcasts, and other audio contents.
  • Configure your Phoenix-compatible connected devices (IP radios, widgets) and customize their catalogs.
  • Experience more interaction with contents through our innovative player.

Hi Juan,

for the moment, WMA, MP3, Real Media, QuickTime are supported.

AAC will be supported on next firmware release ( Mid April ‘08).

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. Excellent work and a major improvement over the beta interface. Thus far, I have been able to enter every station I’ve tried into my personal catalogue. The new web site also allows me to access my favorite stations at work through the Com One interface, a nice added convenience. A job well done! Bravo!

Is the system down? Website not working too good and tells me my email and/or password is invalid. No reception.

Dear Sir, can you please advise me as to when my phoenix comone
will be back in service .I have had no access to my customized selections or some of my memorized stations.

Hi Phil, Hi Peter,

Actually the service is operational now.
Sorry for the Down time, side effect of the migration.

Hi. I’m still having major issues and problems. For example, can you get U.S. station “WLAC” to play? This s just one example of many issues. Another example: constantly get “Reconnecting in x s” message on many, many stations from the stations in your catalogue. Also, “Rebuffering…” message all the time. Can you explain, or help ith these issues. The lack of any explanations for these issues is extremely frustrating. Hopefully your next firmware update will correct these.

Is there a explanation of this new webpage, too?

Thanks

Is there a way to find out about features of the firmware upgrade?
Do you know if security has been improved to accept WPA2?
As it was, security level was too low for my home network making us unable to use the radio.

As now, with the new interface, I have the possibility to have at same time the same station on my computer and on the Phoenix, I’m comparing, and while the signal drops at least ten times in the Phoenix in the computer never downs. To be clear, my computer uses the same internet WiFi connection. Before of this I believed the problem could be the radio station or my internet connection, but now I’m sure the problem is with the Phoenix.
Maybe for the next firmware release this could be corrected, because I just bought the Phoenix to avoid to have my computer on only to hear music.

>Jay,

WPA 2 is one of the next firmware improvements

> Barry,

Have you try URL Snooper (http://urlsnooper.en.softonic.com/)?
that works quite well to find streaming urls

I am trying register my new Phoenix Wifi Radio. I don’t think your website is not working properly. It took all my information, but never send a confirmation email to me. Whenever I try to login, it always say check your email.

Yes, I have used URL Snooper. Three separate times for three different radio stations I’ve tried to add stations not in your catalogue, I’ve used it to find the URL, verified it all three times successfully, and submitted it properly. Each time I have been unable to get any of them to operate on the wifi radio–keep getting “buffering….reconnecting in ‘x’ seconds” messages. This is extremely frustrating since I purchased th radio to listen to my home city stations as I travel, and cannot get it do operate as stated at all. Thanks

My radio is rebooting itself about every ten minutes. Is there a problem at the Phoenix web site that is causing this? Or is there a problem with my radio? Thanks for you help.

Glad to read that it’s not just me. The Phoenix is overall working as one would expect: most stations stream fine. But I too have encountered a few problems.
1. BBC radio 3 streams fine on both of my computers from your website but on the Phoenix it plays about six seconds of the ident stream and stops to rebuffer and reconnect repeatedly, never goes on to the program stream.
2. Australia Radio National and ABC Newsradio streams break and rebuffer every few seconds. They also work fine on my computers from your website. I have tried both WM and RM stream URLs with the same result.
Why okay on computers but not on the Phoenix? Is there help on the way?

can you give us examples of stations?

> Hi Dan,

The problem is now identified (the device stops playing just after the intro) and will be fixed a new firmware version that will be released in early April.

Dan – re: Problem with BBC Radio 3

I had this problem also. There are two BBC R3 streams in the main catalog. Use the one other than the one you are using. It works fine and there is no intro either. It may be that the malfunctioning one is a WM feed which is no longer available to overseas listeners. Only Realaudio files work for BBC listeners outside the UK.

As for ABC Australia, I experience the same issues. Hopefully, the firmware update they are planning will solve it. Curiously, ABC Classic FM and Triple J do not have this problem; but the other ABC networks and local stations do and it makes them unlistenable in my estimation.

Hope this info helps you.

Dan:

Looks like I was wrong about Radio 3. I swear it worked before, but it clearly doesn’t now. Not only that, but when I tried to reload the url from the BBC R3 web site, it wouldn’t play on the Phoenix or the Com One web site.

Guess we’ll just have to wait for the firmware upgrade.

John:

I’m glad you confirmed what I found with BBC R3. I am a real novice with this stuff and always wonder what I am doing wrong.

I had already found out that ABC Classic worked fine. It streams MP3 at 128 Kb as opposed to WMA at 40 Kb for the other ABC stations. Maybe that is why it works so well? I had a now obsolete Linksys Media Link which only supported MP3, so I could get very few stations, but they were very stable.

By the way does the website remember you at log-in, or do you have to go through a manual entry every time? The first day or two of the new platform, it remembered me and logged me in. Since then, no.

31 03 2008
John Figliozzi

Dan:

No I have to manual log in every time unless I’ve gone off for just a few minutes. I noticed that they did correct the syntax on the message though–changing “had” to “have”.

I think this form of radio–and this device in particular–are very much a work in progress. We are to a significant extent early adopters and beta testers.

BTW, can you get the RTE (Ireland) stations to work anymore? I had pretty seamless audio from RTE Radio 1 et al up until last Thursday night. Now since then all I get is a “server overload, etc.” message. I’ve tried reloading them–they appear to have changed to .smil format. Works on the Com One web site with the computer but apparently not on the Phoenix itself–at least not yet.

Odd thing with the RTE Radio 1 audio when I could still hear it: on that station and that one alone my radio would freeze and then reboot itself about every 20 minutes. Very strange. I wonder if Baptiste has a explanation for that one. Who know? Maybe that’s why it’s inaccessible at the moment.

Hi all,

just to let know that our software tech team is currently working on these streaming issues.

I will keep you informed.

John, excellent review in Monitoring Times of this radio. I’ve ordered one and it will arrive Friday. I am not expecting perfection and acknowledge that I’m an early adopter. I’m encouraged to see Com-One actively making improvements and addressing defects.

I’ll always be a fan of shortwave, though I’m excited to have easy access to the content that has become difficult (if not impossible) to receive via SW in North America.

John Figliozzi

Baptiste:

I’m mystified by something and hope you can explain it. I’ve tried manually entering into my personal catalogue the new urls for RTE Ireland’s four networks. But while it appears they are being accepted at the web interface, what is actually happening is that the firmware is defaulting my entries to the existing (and now inaccurate) urls in the main catalog. However, attempts to enter new urls for Sveriges Radio’s various networks have been met with mixed success. P1, P3, Atlas were accepted and now play where none of Sveriges Radio’s links in the main catalog do. (Evidently, the ones you have are outdated.) But P2 defaults to the P1 url even after numerous attempts to enter the correct one for P2. And SR Klassick only yields an error message that says that the url is not recognized in the database. (!?)

Should any of this be happening? Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, sam. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

John:

After your message I tried RTE, like you with no success, not even from the website. But I have had good success adding stations: KUAT and GA Public Radio were using outdated URLs which I updated to current. Also added ‘Listen Again’ URLs for the BBC’s Outlook program.

Sam is going to have fun with this device. I had about given up on shortwave, and this is a great replacement.

Baptiste:

What does Error 12 mean and why does it come up on my Phoenix radio screen after I have apparently been successful in adding a link. By this I mean the web site accepts it, but when I try to get the Phoenix to play it I get an error 12 message instead.

Thanks.

John

So far it’s very fun, though I’m getting many Error 9 and Error 12 messages, as well as the issue where the radio repeatedly displays “buffering – connecting in x seconds.” I can listen to BBCWS on the Com-One website, but get Error 9 when I attempt to listen on the Phoenix.

Does anyone at Com-One have an update on when these issues will be resolved?

Many thanks,

Sam

Dear Baptiste, please advise on my radio will not set to new British summer time
even when I set to gmt +1 hour. it resets the time to plus 2 hours. anyone else having problems like this.

many thanks
Peter.

Peter:

I noticed that my radio automatically switched to summer time this morning (Sunday). I live in NY (the US eastern time zone UTC -5) and had set my radio to Atlantic time (UTC -4) to get the screen to display the accurate time over the last few weeks. This morning it was off by an hour. (The US switched to summer time the second Sunday of March.) Now–with the Phoenix firmware having automatically switched to summer time–I’ve reset my radio’s time to US eastern time zone UTC -5. With the newly automatic compensation for summer time, my radio now displays the correct time.

It should work for you as well, if I’ve understood your question correctly.

John.
Thank you for your help and advice , I have tried to reset my Phoenix to
+1 hour (France, Germany gmt) but my radio shows a 2 hour advance on the display, which is probably correct for their time zone. I have also removed the batteries to see if I could reset the whole radio but no luck.
best regards .
Peter.

John, a thought– I just set my radio to USA eastern time -5 hours and this shows the correct time. ie 1435 Ireland +1 hours on my wall clock, Eastern time 0935 hours.
Peter.

Hey all,

I thought it might be fun to create a message forum for discussion of the Com-One Phoenix. Not to replace the valuable comments that are on this Blog, but perhaps a better forum for general discussion. Please visit:

http://comonephoenix.messageforums.net/

I just set this up quickly, so please be patient as I make changes and improvements (please send me your suggestions!).

Sam -

Baptiste has said previously that the next firmware update is scheduled to be implemented by mid-April. As we’ve noted, there are a number of issues which we hope will be addressed at that time.
